If you have an auto accident, here are some tips –

1.     Relax, gather your thoughts, take a deep breath

2.     Check to see if you or any passengers are injured. If so, use whatever means is available to call for help. Shout, use cell phone, speak to people who approach, use On-star or other device.

3.     Call police/911

4.     Be careful exiting the vehicle

5.     Inspect your vehicle and other vehicle or involved property

6.     Exchange name, address phone number, license number, insurance company, policy number and phone number with the other party.

7.     Take pictures with your cell phone or other camera.

8.     Use a notebook to make other notes

9.     Move the vehicle if required by law and it is operable

10.  Give statement to authorities

11.  Don’t admit any fault. That will be determined later.

12.  Get a case number from the authorities

13.  Call my office after things have cleared and you are in a safe place, or when you get home. Even the  next day or after the weekend is fine.

14.  If you feel the need to call in a claim immediately and my office is not available, call the claims line for your carrier. The numbers are listed at the right.

15.  Even if you do call the claim in yourself, call my office. We can help you with other items, coach you through the process, and help you keep things moving.

16.  If you are not at fault, or don’t think you are, we can provide some advice and assistance. We cannot represent you to the other carrier, but we can tell you what they will be looking for.

17.  Don’t worry if the other party files a claim and you think it is unjustified. The adjuster will sort that out. He doesn’t want to pay a false claim any more than you do. He will follow all proper procedures.
